Cross-border e-commerce has indisputably become air cargo’s golden egg in recent years to a point where it is no exaggeration to suggest that it is fast-becoming the sector’s leading commodity surpassing general cargo.

The airfreight industry demonstrated remarkable resilience in 2024, adapting to economic fluctuations and shifting demand patterns. Boosted by the surge in e-commerce, as well as increased shipments of perishables and high-value goods, there was areas of significant trade growth.

For example, Vietnam is showing a continuous increase as various multinational companies relocate their production plants from China to Vietnam.

Europe's airfreight suffers as economies are caught in ‘doom loop’ of low growth

Expectations of a bumper airfreight peak season are beginning to dwindle as a successful spell of front-loading fills warehouses.

In its summary of the October rates scene, the Baltic Airfreight Index noted an 8.1% increase in worldwide prices, and described the month as another “series of solid gain”, pointing to a particularly strong performance on major lanes out of Asia, to Europe and North America.

Bottlenecks begin to form in Asia as air peak season approaches

UK firms should 'diversify sourcing' amid post-Brexit customs confusion

UK businesses should consider diversifying their sourcing from a single market to suppliers in Africa, the Americas and Asia, according to a new report.

The report notes marked declines in the flow of goods between the UK and the EU since the 2020 introduction of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA).

It claims: “The TCA has caused severe disruption in UK-EU supply chains, particularly in consumer and intermediate goods. Smaller EU economies have been more affected by reduced UK export varieties, while larger ones have seen smaller declines.”

Air charter market braced for very busy Q4, and prices are rising

Charter brokers have warned that the fourth quarter in air freight will be very busy – but that capacity is still available “for a price”.

However, brokers aren’t too concerned over impossibly high demand in the case of a US east and Gulf coast port strike.

“There is tight availability for widebody aircraft,” explained Dan Morgan-Evans, group cargo director for Air Charter Service. “Ecommerce is a factor everywhere really, and it’s a strong market.
